Level 0 Through Level 5 Drywall Finishing
The Gypsum Association defines six standard drywall finish levels. The right level depends on how the wall will be lit, painted or textured. We'll recommend the level that matches your project—and hold every wall and ceiling to that standard.
Level 1
Level 1 Finish
Joints and interior angles have tape embedded in joint compound. Surface is free of excess compound but tool marks and ridges are acceptable.
Recommended for
Concealed areas: plenums above ceilings, attics, service corridors.
Level 2
Level 2 Finish
Tape embedded, plus one additional skim coat over joints, angles, fasteners and accessories. Surface is free of excess compound.
Recommended for
Garages, warehouses, storage areas or as a substrate for tile.
Level 3
Level 3 Finish
Two coats of joint compound over tape, plus fastener and accessory coverage. Surface is smooth and free of tool marks and ridges.
Recommended for
Walls receiving heavy or medium texture (knockdown, orange peel) before paint.
Level 4
Level 4 Finish
Three coats of joint compound over tape, fasteners and accessories. Surface is smooth and ready for flat or light-texture paint.

Why Proper Drywall Finishing Matters Before Texture or Paint
Drywall finishing is the difference between a wall that reads as one continuous surface and a wall that shows every seam, fastener and imperfection the moment sunlight hits it. Paint doesn't hide bad finishing—it magnifies it. That's why the taping, mudding and sanding work has to be done to the correct level before any primer, texture or finish paint goes on.
A properly taped seam locks the two boards together so seasonal movement doesn't crack the joint open a year later. Multiple feathered coats of joint compound flatten out the wall so the eye can't trace where one board ends and the next begins. Sanding and raking-light inspection catch the ridges and low spots that would otherwise telegraph through gloss paint or under LED lighting.

Taping
Paper or mesh tape is embedded into the first coat of joint compound over every seam and interior angle. Proper tape embedment is what stops cracks from returning years later.

Joint Compound Application
Two to three coats of joint compound are applied and feathered wider with each pass. Fasteners, corner beads and accessories are covered with matching sequential coats.

Sanding
Dry compound is sanded flat with pole sanders and detail blocks between coats and after the final coat. Dust is controlled to protect the rest of the home.

Surface Inspection
Every wall and ceiling is inspected under raking light—handheld work light held parallel to the surface—to catch every shadow, ridge and low spot the eye would otherwise miss.

Final Touch-Ups
Any imperfection found during inspection is spotted, feathered and re-sanded until the surface is uniform, smooth and paint-ready.

What is the difference between Level 4 and Level 5?
