What drywall crack repair really involves
Almost every drywall crack in a home wall follows the substrate — cracks run along a seam, radiate out from door and window corners, or trace the edge of a corner bead. Filling them with lightweight compound and painting is why the same crack shows up again a year later. Our repairs remove the failing tape, reinforce the joint if needed, retape with paper (not mesh) and three-coat mud so the crack has structural resistance to the next move.
Corner-bead cracks are common in homes 15–40 years old — the bead was originally fastened with too few staples, and now the corner flexes. We refasten, mud, feather and re-texture. Long horizontal cracks across the middle of a wall are usually butt joints or a break at a change in framing — those get back-blocked when we can access the cavity.
Every crack repair ends with matched texture and paint. For walls with only one break, we can often feather paint to a corner instead of doing the full wall. For heavier repairs or accent-lit walls, we recommend full-wall paint so no patch is visible.

Why does the same crack keep coming back?
Usually because the previous repair used mesh tape or just filled the crack with compound. Moving joints need paper tape bedded in mud, and often back-blocking behind the seam.
Can you repair cracks in an older Portland home with plaster?
Yes — plaster cracks are stabilized differently (often with a mesh + plaster wash or a skim coat over a fiberglass fabric) but we handle both.
