Metal stud framing is the backbone of every commercial drywall job and a lot of residential wet-area walls. We frame with 20 and 25-gauge stud where appropriate, land tracks on layout, and hand the wall to the drywall crew ready to rock.
What metal stud framing really involves
Metal stud framing has a lot of small details that make or break the drywall that goes on top. Track has to be shot to slab straight, studs plumbed to layout, cripples cut clean at openings, and door frames anchored so they don't move when the door swings. When any of those steps get sloppy the drywall crew fights the wall for two days and the finish still reads off.
We frame our own drywall jobs on commercial work — no hand-off between framer and drywall crew. That keeps schedule tight and lets us adjust as we go: if a wall is 1/4" out of layout, we correct it at framing instead of shimming behind the rock.
For residential we frame metal-stud walls in bathrooms (rot-proof), basements against foundation walls, and mechanical soffits. Cold-formed steel isn't for load-bearing residential framing — that's a separate structural scope — but for interior partitions it's often the right call.
